Apart from the damages occurring as a result of nature’s furies, Fire happens to be the second most important cause of devastation in Nevada. Be it disaster occurring due to electrical appliances or wiring in the house or bush and wild fires, fire insurance has always been included in the typical American homeowner policy.

In fact, the very first homeowners insurance was fire insurance. Naturally it is absolutely an integral part of the basic homeowner's policy.

However, as more and more houses get built in the ‘beyond the urban’ land where settlements and forests merge, the automatic inclusion of fire coverage in home insurance policies becomes less certain. With the increase in the numbers of catastrophes owing to fires, insurance companies now may require more risk-management procedures from policyholders.

Tips on obtaining fire insurance policies

One of the pre requisites of obtaining a homeowners policy is to keep the hedges surrounding the house, trimmed and having the trees at a certain distance from structures.

Also fire-safety inspections of homes in high-risk Western areas are conducted routinely by some insurance companies. Then reports are formulated on measures to increase the safety of individual homes.

If the homeowners do not toe the dotted line as far as the recommendations in the reports go, then, the insurance carriers can refuse to renew their policies.

No insurance rate discounts are offered for policyholders who maintain approved defensible space though it is encouraged by fire fighting associations and the insurance companies alike.

Another area which comes into risk management deals with the proximity to sprinklers and hydrants. Sprinklers inside homes, within neighborhoods are also eligible for discounts. So if you live in an area where there are no fire hydrants, you have to have sprinklers in your home in order to be insured.

Discounts are offered by State Farm to homeowners who have sprinklers. If you have installed sprinklers at home, you would be able to avail of a discount of 5 percent discount while if sprinklers have been installed through out your home the discount may just rise to 10 percent.

This is good news for those who might be paying higher rates to live in scenic but more fire-prone urban-interface areas. You may live in an area with thick green cover which is a factor well worth considering, but that does not mean that policy rates will rise. Nevada has ordinances making sprinklers mandatory in areas where the city does not provide water.

So if you are planning on buying a home insurance policy ensure that apart from the location, crime rates in the area and age of the structure, you have sprinklers installed on your premises and maintain the defensible space.
