Here it is. If you don't care about the difference between a deductible and a donut, here is the quick 5 minute version of how to save money on your policy.
- Find your current insurance policy. You don't need the whole thing, just the front page that has the information about what you have now. It should show all of the coverage choices you've made and how much you are paying for each one.
- Look for the box on this page that says "Free Insurance Quotes." Type in your zip code and hit the "get quotes now" button. This will show you a list of insurance companies that serve your area. These are all brand-name companies or agencies that can get you good insurance coverage.
- Read the text that describes each company. If it sounds like the company will fit your needs, then click on the "Get a Quote" link next to the text. This will open up a new window that has that company's quote form in it.
- Fill out each quote form completely and honestly. The insurance companies can't help you if you're not honest and most will check your answers with public databases. Make sure you fill out the entire form until it says you are done. Also, so that you can compare apples-to-apples, make sure you fill out the same coverage choices on each site. Each company will have slightly different choices, but make it as close as you can. A good place to start is by filling in the same coverage you have now, although most sites have help features that will assist you in choosing coverage levels. For each company, you will either get a page that says they are emailing you a quote or you will see the quote itself appear on the screen.
- Repeat Step 3 & 4 for each company listed on our shopping page. You should get at least 3 quotes and if you have time, try to get a quote from every company listed unless the description doesn't suit your needs.
- Compare the rates. For most people who get 3 to 5 quotes, the difference between the highest and lowest will be hundreds of dollars. Sometimes more than $1000. Don't always just choose the lowest one, check out the company's website and choose the one that seems best for you.
- By all means, LOCK IN YOUR SAVINGS. Many, many people go through the hassle and time of getting quotes and then get distracted and never get around to buying. They find a policy that is hundreds of dollars cheaper and put "buy policy" on their to-do list. Don't make this mistake! Once you've found a good policy that will save you money - buy it and save that money.
- Come back and shop. Insurance rates change all the time. Bookmark this site and set a reminder on your calendar to check your rates at least once per year. You may be able to save every single year (or even every 6 months) by frequently checking your rates. New carriers enter our marketplace all the time, too, which will give you different choices when you come back.
